Dragon Ball Z Duels

Page history last edited by MiThiKaL 10 months, 2 weeks ago Saved with comment

A group of us within the Epic Duels community have been working on a full stand alone Dragon Ball Z expansion set. The mechanics of the game seem to fit fairly well for a DBZ fighting game. The one thing that initially made this difficult was how to fit characters into the "Melee" or "Ranged" character typing. So we introduced a new mechanic to take care of that. Characters will build up their Energy gauge and use that to fire off ranged attacks. After quite a bit of testing, we feel this system functions well and is a great addition.

We are still adding new decks to the mix and currently have 51 ready to play. The "core" set will be the first 8 decks listed. You can play any mix of the decks, but those are the initial decks with the most testing. The rest of the decks are attempted to be balanced around those without disrupting the gameplay in a negative way. The core set is mostly based on the anime characters up to the end of the Frieza saga, with a few exceptions.

We did make some notable changes to the original rules. If you have a defeated character, you cannot discard their cards to heal your other character. Instead, you can spend an action to discard 1 of those cards to gain +2 Energy for your other character. We feel discarding to heal usually drags out the game longer than it should. You must defeat all characters on the enemy team to win, rather than just the major characters. There are no starting points for the characters and you are not required to place your major and minor characters adjacent. You are open to place your chatacters anywhere in the first 3 rows,. Feel free to play with your own house rules though!

Energy

⦁ All melee characters will have an Energy gauge, which is used to extend the range of their attacks.

⦁ 1 Energy = 1 Range. If there is 1 space between you and the target, you are required to spend 1 Energy to attack them (2 spaces between them, it takes 2 Energy). Energy must be reduced before you begin your attack.

⦁ All characters (who use Energy) will begin the game with 2 energy.

⦁ Energy count cannot exceed 10 or go below 0.

⦁ Some characters are listed as ranged and do not utilize energy in any way. They may attack at range for no cost.

⦁ Since these "Ranged" characters do not have an Energy tracker, if a cards effect takes into account the Energy of them, you use that players hand count as a reference. (Ex: If the affected player has 6 cards in their hand, that is the number you use to compare their characters Energy)

⦁ Special cards that state, "Pick an enemy you could attack at range", imply that it does not cost Energy to use that card at range.

⦁ Every time you attack an adjacent enemy (with a basic or power combat card, not a special), your attacking character gains 1 Energy after the attack is completely resolved.

⦁ If a cards effect attacks an adjacent enemy more than once, or multiple adjacent enemies, you still only gain 1 Energy after combat.

⦁ If your Major or Minor(s) character is defeated, you may spend an action on your turn to gain 2 Energy by discarding 1 card for the defeated character.

Energy Tracker: This is needed to keep track of your current energy count.  You only need these if you dont print the custom DBZ HP charts in the zip below.
